Background: Picos (sound systems) are vital communal social settings for CHAMPETA culture that is popular on the main coastal cities of Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa MartaJamaican-inspired handmade & brightly-colored speaker structures appeared in Colombia in the 50’s.  When African & Caribbean music swept through the region during the 70’s & 80’s, the picos played a vital role in building a collective Afro-Latino identity for these coastal people of mixed ancestry.  Music imports arrived to the Atlantic Coast via visiting sailors from overseas. They exchanged & traded records to the local pico owners who especially prided themselves upon possessing exclusive “rare” records from the African continent that they could highlight at their CHAMPETA parties.
